A few short years ago, 5GHz was a dream clock speed amongst overclocking enthusiasts, only being possible on extreme cooling systems and specific products. In the CPU market, the 5GHz dream was first realised with Sandy Bridge, at least amongst seasoned overclockers who won the silicon lottery, with the clock speed returning to Intel's backburner until the release of Kaby Lake, the CPU generation which made 5GHz overclocks relatively common.
With increasingly powerful CPUs comes the need to feed them with data, requiring faster and faster memory to allow CPUs to work optimally, especially as core counts continue to rise and workloads become increasingly memory focused. Today 3200MHz memory kits are becoming extremely common, though it wasn't long ago when many considered 3200MHz overkill.
My point here is that somebody needs to push the boundary of what is possible, push the limit to a level beyond the norm, a role which G.Skill has filled in the DDR memory market for quite some time. G.Skill has created working dual-channel 5,000MHz DDR4 memory kits, achieving on air cooling something which was only possible on Liquid Nitrogen a few short years ago.
This kit was successfully validated on an MSI Z370I Gaming Pro Carbon AC motherboard with an Intel i7 8700K, using a 4700MHz memory kit overclocked to 5GHz with CL timings of 21-26-26-46. While this kit is not quite ready for the consumer market, G.Skill has stated that they will "make every effort to bring this specification onto the consumer market, and bring the experience of extreme performance to worldwide users".

This undertaking was achieved on Samsung-made DDR4 B-Die ICs, which were selected/binned by G.Skill for their highest performance DDR4 memory kit.
In the memory market, G.Skill is the company who continuously searches for a level which is beyond overkill, pushing the market forward by delivering memory solutions which are beyond the needs of most consumers. Given enough time, 5GHz memory will someday be commonplace, provided DDR memory isn't replaced by a new standard in the meantime. Just remember that the journey started here with G.Skill
